In 1976, the volcano on the island of Guadeloupe was on the verge of erupting. Despite the evacuation order, one man refused to leave. When Werner Herzog read about him in the newspaper, he quickly assembled a film crew and flew to the Caribbean. High up on the mountain, he found what he was looking for: a stubborn soul—the kind that defies the very limits of human behavior.
