About
“Super Paradise” beach was the shining symbol of Mykonos’ golden age—the Cinderella of the Greek islands, transformed from a remote Aegean fishing village into a hippie haven in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Against the backdrop of a military dictatorship in Greece and global political chaos, Mykonos was, by all accounts, the sexiest place on earth—and certainly the most liberated: nudity and same-sex love flourished openly, in stark contrast to the conservative climate of the mainland. But as the bohemian crowd discovered this paradise, its magnetism drew celebrities, and investors, oligarchs, and party fiends soon followed, until Mykonos rebranded itself as a mass-tourism product—a capitalist theme park. Spanning fifty years of sunshine and upheaval, this nostalgic yet clear-eyed documentary offers a wealth of archival and human material, examining the dynamics of tourism and the firsthand accounts of those who were there, and capturing the gulf between the giant cruise ships casting their dark shadows and the Super 8 footage that takes us back to a different, freer time, if only briefly.
