About

An observation of Israeli society during the year it confronted the greatest trauma in its history. Ritual does not focus on the major occurrences, but turns its gaze inward, to the margins of unfolding reality. Moving between locations and events across the land, a portrait emerges of a fractured and polarized society seeking comfort and agency through rituals in the public sphere: from memorial ceremonies, to protests and escapist gatherings, to ultra-nationalist marches and religious devotion. Through these rituals, Israelis respond to reality while attempting to reshape it. Throughout the film, the camera returns to the harsh landscape of a devastated Gaza, a view that has itself become a national ritual.
