About
“How well did I really know her?” This question, posed by acclaimed documentarian Alan Berliner (First Cousin Once Removed, Letter to the Editor) at the opening of his new film, is what pulls him into the rich archive left behind by Benita Raphan—a New York-based visual artist and filmmaker, and above all, Berliner’s longtime friend. His grief, coupled with that detective’s drive, spurs him to take on an obsessive, monumental project: scouring dozens of hard drives, countless journals, experimental films, and photographs to create a cinematic cut-and-paste journey through her life and death. Berliner does more than film family and friends talking about Benita; he lets us experience reality through her voice and eyes, using images that she—a turbulent artist who lived on the edge, with a joyful passion for her work and an emotional void that could never be filled—chose to leave behind. Berliner’s sweeping, fast-paced film is a tribute to a close friend who left and the work she never got to complete.
