This Christmas tale will make you crave the warmth of a roaring fireplace even in the middle of a heatwave. It begins with a mystery that has by now become family lore: For over two decades, a package full of gifts from an anonymous sender has appeared on the Sandnes family’s doorstep in Northern Norway each year, bearing the note “Merry Christmas from all of us in Arendal.” After years of guesswork and theories, the Sandnes’ grandchildren, Adèle (9) and Brage (6), set out on a cross-country Christmas Eve adventure to solve the mystery once and for all. What starts as a playful quest—in which neighbors and relatives are questioned, old inscriptions are analyzed, and security camera footage is tracked down—soon takes a profound and moving turn. Director Silje Jacobsen, who happens to be the young detectives’ mother, delivers a perfectly crafted cinematic treat that balances charming humor, genuine suspense, and moments of human grace.
