About

One of the best-known college traditions—further popularized by the Pitch Perfect films’ TikTok fame—is the student a cappella group. At the center of this fittingly pop-spirited documentary is the University of Southern California’s SoCal VoCals, whose members dream of careers on stage and for whom the group is far more than a social club: it is a gateway to the professional sphere. The film follows them through a make-or-break year that culminates in the genre’s holy grail—the international world championship—with the weight of five previous wins on their shoulders. Group life unfolds not only in rehearsals and qualifying competitions, but also in a shared house where deep friendships and solidarity take root. The film focuses on several of the vocalists, each with a complex identity and great expectations. Through expertly orchestrated performances of hits by Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, and Bob Dylan—blending octaves, layering voices, and syncing dance moves—an energetic and heartfelt portrait of the next generation takes shape. A special screening dedicated to Shachar Troen Matias and Shlomi David Matias—the sister and brother-in-law of the film’s director, Abie Troen—a beloved and talented couple of musicians who were murdered in their home at Kibbutz Holit on October 7.
