About
In March 2017, a Georgian filmmaker received a letter: “I saw you on TV, speaking about resisting the forces that are trying to silence us. For 11 years, I was imprisoned by my parents. They are afraid of society and ashamed of who I am. I need to let this go to feel alive. Your camera will make me feel safer. Please, come… alone.” So begins the story of Adelina, a trans woman who fled to Vienna in the hopes of finally starting her life there. She tries to build a new life for herself, but even in a seemingly free city, her past continues to haunt her, and the pain of loneliness refuses to subside. What happens when even freedom is frightening? Director Rati Tsiteladze captures his protagonist’s struggles using Baroque imagery imbued with layers of meaning. The result is a film as visually striking as it is soul-wrenching—a meditation on oppression and survival, literal and emotional exile, and a hopeful bond of love that transcends physical distance and proves to be thicker than water.
