True to his singular way of observing both nature and human nature, Werner Herzog accompanies conservation biologist Dr. Steve Boyes—a man driven by a years-long obsession—deep into Angola’s wild, forested highlands in search of a giant, mysterious, and elusive elephant species. Aided by the finest trackers, Boyes is hunting for DNA evidence to prove that his jumbo-sized fantasy is, in fact, reality. But the physical pursuit of these ghost elephants is also a spiritual one, a dreamlike quest, and an opportunity for Herzog to reflect on memories of Angola before its civil war, which cut down every living thing in its path with indiscriminate fury, and on prophetic visions of a time that may already have been and may yet come again.
