About

The day after the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Jane Elliott, an elementary school teacher in rural Iowa, conducted an experiment that changed the face of American education: she divided her class into two groups, blue eyes and brown eyes, giving White, Christian children a bitter taste of discrimination. Today, nearing 90, Elliott is far from a sweet grandmother. With her trademark sense of humor, she calls herself a “bitch in control” and is revealed as a fierce preacher unafraid to tell off her audience and shake them out of their ignorance. The film follows her current struggle against Trumpian populism and censorship in the US as she rallies to defend banned books and liberal curricula, while she and her and her family reflect on the painful consequences of idealism and of dedicating her life to the cause. The power of this incisive documentary lies not just in its capturing of an icon, but in revisiting a fundamental question: what is education? Do your homework: listen to Jane Elliott.
