About

For the first time in its history, the Orchestre de Paris opens its doors to cameras, allowing them to capture how 120 musicians unite under the baton of brilliant young conductor Klaus Mäkelä to create harmony in real time. Breaking the traditional barrier between audience and stage, the film reveals the orchestra’s day-to-day labor: hectic rehearsals, getting new players and guest conductors up to speed, and the constant effort of becoming something greater than the sum of its parts. As one musician notes, highlighting the human and political dimensions of an ensemble’s work, “to create harmony, we must be a little more than just colleagues.” To perform well as a group, they must listen and attend to individual needs. Indeed, the undisputed star of the film—winner of the Grand Prix for Musical Documentary at FIPADOC—is the music itself. Recorded with a remarkable 90-microphone setup, the film’s sound changes with the camera angles, making viewers feel as if they are sitting right next to the musicians in the heart of the Philharmonie de Paris.
